What actually makes it “Russian”
A Russian manicure is a dry manicure done with a small electric file (an e-file) and tiny precision bits, instead of soaking the hands and cutting the skin with nippers. The technician gently lifts and refines the cuticle line, then removes only the non-living tissue that sits on the nail plate. The result is an exceptionally clean, defined edge — the look that made the technique go viral.
Because the skin around the nail is opened up so precisely, color or builder gel can be placed much closer to the cuticle than with a classic manicure. That single detail is the secret behind the signature “grown-from-the-skin” finish.
Why the color lasts longer
Two reasons. First, the nail plate is completely dry and dust-free before product touches it, so adhesion is excellent — no trapped moisture to cause early lifting. Second, placing color right up to the cuticle means there is no bare strip at the base, so as your nail grows the regrowth line is less obvious. Many clients comfortably reach three weeks before they feel they need a refill.
Is it safe? Choosing your studio
In trained hands, yes — the e-file should refine the cuticle, never grind the living skin or thin the natural nail. Done badly it can cause soreness or hangnails, so technique and hygiene are everything. Ask whether bits are sterilised between clients and watch that the file is moving lightly, not digging. A little tingling is normal; pain is not.
At RANDOMIZED in Amman the Russian manicure is one of our most-requested services, and it pairs beautifully with a BIAB overlay for strength. You can book it from our nail services page — and if you are a fellow tech wanting to master the dry e-file method properly, it is a core part of our nail courses.
Common questions
FAQIt should not. You may feel a light tickle or warmth from the e-file, but a skilled technician works only on dead tissue and never on living skin. Sharp pain or bleeding means the technique is too aggressive — speak up and the pressure should ease immediately.
